Shampoo is one thing that we pretty much all use; unlike makeup, or even a lot of skincare products, shampoo is a truly necessary part of our personal hygiene. I hate to break it to you, but yes, fungal acne can occur on your scalp, too. The reason why I know this is because I also suffer from it. The only thing that has helped me is using a medicated shampoo to treat it and, of course, using fungal acne safe products when washing my hair, and this includes shampoo and conditioner.

As mentioned in our previous post, the treatment of fungal acne requires the use of a medicated shampoo that has an active ingredient such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, or selenium sulfide. However, one should only use this 1-2 times a week in areas that have fungal acne. If you do not have fungal acne on your scalp, it is not necessary to use the treatment as a shampoo and a fungal acne safe shampoo should suffice.

Why you should use a Fungal Acne Safe Shampoo

If you have fungal acne on your scalp, you must use a shampoo that is fungal acne safe. However, even if you only have fungal acne on your face or body, it is still important to use a fungal acne safe shampoo as the shampoo will still come into contact with your skin. I have used non-fungal acne safe shampoos and tried my very best to avoid letting it get onto my face and back by flipping my head upside down – but this is very uncomfortable, and I do not recommend it. Aside from ending up with neck pain, I also still ended up getting fungal acne along my hairline. So, I really recommend that you use a fungal acne safe shampoo instead and wash your hair like a normal human being. 🙂 

Personally, I use a medicated shampoo with ketoconazole every 3-4 days. The rest of the time, I use a regular shampoo that is fungal acne safe. Your routine may be different! It is about finding out what combination works best for your skin and hair.
